An identity preference is an item stored in your MacOS keychain which tells your system which certificate to present when you access a given website in Safari. Identity preferences came into use in MacOS 10.5, and are not used in older versions. To view your identity preferences in the Keychain Access utility, which you will find under Applications > Utilities.
